Dean's Art Awards Enter Now

“The world is wide, and I will not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum,” declared suffragist Frances E. Willard.  Momentum suggests an impetus, a strength or force leading toward change, something new, something moving.
We invite submissions for the Fourth Annual Dean’s Art Award, art that speaks of MOMENTUM.  Show us what momentum is and what it does.
Submission deadline:  March 30th, 2015

Overview

The Dean’s Art Award recognizes student achievement in the field of visual arts and allows the Dean’s Office to directly connect with the student body through the award submission and selection process.  For this award, students submit their own works of visual art to a selection committee comprised of faculty, staff, and student leadership in the Dean’s Office and the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design.  The committee welcomes submissions from all students (undergraduate and graduate) in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Awards will be made for First Place ($350), Second Place ($150), and Honorable Mention. All selected pieces will be exhibited in the Dean’s Office throughout the 2015-16 academic year.

Students may submit up to five (5) pieces for consideration per year.
Submissions must be made as complete electronic portfolios and must include:
  1.   High-resolution digital image of work; for 3-D works up to three (3) photos of one work may be submitted
  2.   Title of work(s)
  3.   Medium/media

  5.   A 50-150 word  Artist’s Statement that relates the submissions to this year’s theme, “Momentum”

Students must have been enrolled in at least one Arts & Sciences course during the 2014-2015 academic year and must have been enrolled during at least one semester between summer 2014 and spring 2015.

Submissions must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2015.
Winning art work must include hanging/installation instructions, must be ready to hang/install, and must be representative of the images submitted.  The Dean’s Office reserves the right to reject any accepted work that is not delivered suitable for hanging and display, or work that differs in any way from the image represented in the submission. Upon acceptance, artists are required to sign an artist agreement. The Dean’s Office reserves the right to reproduce accepted entries for publicity purposes.

Award Timeline

The Dean’s Art Award operates on a one-year cycle.  Winners will be notified on or before April 20, 2015.  Winning art work should be delivered to the Dean’s office no later than May 8, 2015 and will be installed during the summer months for display during the 2015-16 academic year.  A reception honoring the winners will be held during Fall Semester 2015.

Some AD Examples from Graham Robson, Katie Welch, Jonathan Splitlog, Oreta Taylor

I would suggest you put the large AD on one board and the two smaller ADS on another board.
Make sure the continuity is there throughout all 3 ADS.  Make sure you can read all the type and make sure your client logo is large enough on all 3 ADS (although it can be scaled accordingly to  each composition.)

Direct Mailers (Collateral)

From Jonathan Splitlog: Digital mockup of the mailer I'm working on for A Capella Books.
The idea is that ACB is having a "signing day" where a lot of famous authors are coming to sign books and conduct panel Q&A's. It would be a whole party at ACB with authors and food. To get a discount on your tickets, you present your signed "Your National Best Seller." You sign your books and get a discount to the book signing.

A Direct Mailer can be anything you wish to create for your client.

In it's most simply composition, the mailer can't be a sheet of 8.5"x11" paper with some information in it. It could be an invitation to an event or a coupon/sale that you get in the mail or possibly an announcement for an event or fundraser or just a "keep the date" announcement for forthcoming events with your client.

It must represent your client in such a creative and inventive way that even your client will be awed by it.It could be a pop out mailer or one that has a piece that tears off in order to mail back to someone or you can use die cuts or accordion folds or gate folds.....etc.

Another great tip when we think about sustainability is to think of ways to extend your mailer's useful life. Can it be or become something useful for the user? Maybe it can be a calendar, a mobile, a nutrition chart in the shape of a movable disk, a coupon book, etc? Whatever it is, make sure it will make the receiver hesitate to throw it away.

What is a Direct Mailer?
A direct mailer is a marketing or advertising piece that is distributed through the postal system. It can be a postcard, brochure or complex package that includes a letter, reply card, envelope and assorted inserts. Regardless of its format, the goal of direct mailers is advertising. The call to action may be to place an order, dial a phone number or visit a website. The ultimate intent is to raise awareness and generate sales. The sender might be a company offering products or services or an organization soliciting contributions.

A Direct Mailer can:
- Generate leads
- Increase store traffic
- Respond to competitive activity
- Generate customer loyalty
- Create new customers/referrals
- Improve sales force efficiency
- Improve customer service
- Increase customers' average purchase amounts - generate higher sales
- Announce store hours/sales/new locations
- Augment media advertising to top prospects and select customers

Specs:
It can be any size you wish. You can have this mailer fold and go into an envelope or can become the mailer/envelope all in one. You can create any format using any kind of paper you wish. Have fun with this.  It should contain the following:
- your client's logo
- real content (it can be anything from another resouce regarding text or you can write it yourself, but the copy must be real)
- real taglines (it must encourage readers to take action)
- you client's address/addresses & contact info

* Once again, I'll remind you of the margins. Leave some nice and decent breathing area around the copy.
** Avoid using the same typeface you used in the logo in the taglines and/or copy. Your designs must be consistent, coherent, but very rich at the same time.
*** Whatever typeface or typefaces you choose in your mailer (two are enough), remember that you should keep their use consistent.

The Great MODA Chair Hack: Enter Now

Last Year Graham Robson and his team won 1st Place in the MODA Chair Hack!
Got Your Team Together for the Great Chair Hack of 2015?
Saturday, April 11, 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Join MODA and IDSA for an afternoon of "chair hacking" at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival!

Known for their classic Swedish simplicity, many IKEA products contain components that are simple in form and consistent in their application. This inherent configurability has created an underground movement of "IKEA hacking" in which people modify, rebuild, reconfigure and customize IKEA pieces to fit their needs.

In keeping with this trend, MODA and IDSA invite you to get hacking! At this year's Dogwood Festival, teams of students, professionals, artists and/or hackers will be given a real-world challenge and will be tasked with designing an innovative solution using the components of an IKEA product (see rules for more details).

Participants will have three hours to complete the challenge and prizes for best design solution will be given.

To participate, just assemble your own team of 2-4 participants and register by contacting
Alice Weston at 404.979.6455 or aweston@museumofdesign.org.

The deadline to register is Monday, April 6. Hurry! Space is limited!

Midterm Guesstimates Sent

Everyone should have gotten an email from me in the past few days that shows where you are at this point in the semester. All of this can change since you still have 5 weeks to go before it's over.

Insure that you keep up your momentum and your creativity.  If you aren't happy with a grade then let me know and we'll come up with a solution. What I want you to have the most is the satisfaction that you did your very best and your work should demonstrate that as well.

There are still a lot of assignments to get through and with limited number of days so the work needs to come faster and with more precision.  Don't lose faith. Keep your sense of humor and work through whatever problems you encounter.  Everything you are doing is for yourself and your future as a designer (or just as a creative soul.)

Find your authentic voice. You do that by working relentlessly and by being engaged in what you are doing.
